Elevate Your Writing Skills with These 5 "Random" Tips

Writing is difficult, but sometimes all you need to elevate your work is a new perspective or idea. That is why I have compiled a list of five (seemingly random) tips that are sure to help you enhance your writing and make it the best that it can be. These unconventional tips are guaranteed to improve your writing and spark new writing techniques that you haven't heard before. So what are you waiting for? Continue reading for five unique writing tips that will elevate your writing skills.

Change The Font

One of my favorite ways to regain my inspiration and creativity when writing is by changing up the font. For example, while I typically use Times New Roman to write my stories, switching the font to Comic Sans can jumpstart my creativity. After all, sometimes, all it takes to spark your creativity is a fresh visual perspective. Switching up your font can alter how you perceive your writing, making it feel like you're reading your work for the first time.

Commit to Your First Title

Another important thing to consider is using the title you created right at the beginning of your project. This can be helpful because it ensures that you don’t overthink the title from the start. If you stick with your initial idea, even if it's just a placeholder, you don't have to stress about what the title of your book will be. Plus, this initial title can serve as a guiding light, keeping you focused on your main themes or ideas. Overall, it's a great idea to commit to your first title, however, note that you can always tweak it later. If you want some tips on how to choose a title for your story, click on the button below.

Write the Ending First

While it is most common to write your book in chronoligcal order, sometimes that isn't the most helpful method. Instead, you should consider writing the end of your book first. This can be beneficial because you will know where your story is headed before you even start writing the actual beginning of it. Crafting the ending first gives you a clear destination and ensures your story stays on course. It can also be a great way for you to ensure there is tension and continuity throughout your piece.

Don't Make Writing a Chore

Writing should be enjoyable, not a task to dread. That is why it is critical that you don't view writing as a chore or a job. In general, you should avoid turning it into a checklist item or something to 'get done, rather let it be a process that evolves naturally, one that you can look forward to and have fun with. To do so, you must establish a positive relationship with writing (and your story). Listed below are five tried-and-true ways you can create a positive relationship with writing, so you don't view it as a painful task. Remember writing should be fun!

  1. Write when you are inspired.

  2. Establish clear goals.

  3. Don't force yourself to write.

  4. Adjust your mindset.

  5. Reward yourself.

Read Every Day

Lastly, it is so important that you read every day. Great writers are avid readers. This is because reading daily can expand your vocabulary, deepen your understanding of novel structures, and also introduce you to different writing styles. A great way to ensure you have time to reach each day is by allotting time to do so. Set aside a little time each day to immerse yourself in the works of others. That being said, it's important to remember that when you read, the aim isn't to mimic or replicate lines or stories in your own writing. Doing so not only disregards the effort that authors put into their work but it can also make you feel stale and unoriginal.

Writing doesn't have to be work, rather it can be fun! With the tips listed above, writing can become a more enjoyable and rewarding experience. Embracing these unconventional tips and incorporating them into your writing routine can help you unleash your creativity, overcome challenges, and refine your work.
