How to Stay Motivated as a Writer

It is all too common for writers to be completely motivated when writing the beginning of a piece, but when it is time for the middle, most writers often get stuck, unmotivated, and sluggish. This pattern doesn't only affect new writers, but professional writers as well. However, there are numerous reasons to begin writing again, from including new characters to thematic holes or plot twists. These tips explain how to stay motivated as a writer, even when you don't feel engaged.

Maintain a writing routine

In order to stay motivated as a writer, it is important to create a writing routine. Set aside a period of time per day specifically dedicated to writing. The amount of time you set aside, doesn't matter, but it should be a comfortable amount for you. Once you have this time set aside for writing, it is crucial to honor it as you would for any other appointment. This way, you are committing yourself to write, even if you don't feel like it.

Have a comfortable working space

It is important to have a comfortable space when you are writing. When writing you should feel at ease, mentally and physically, as you will feel more engaged in your piece. So, create a space without loud noises, poor lighting, or uncomfortable seating, that won't take away from your motivation. This way you will feel more relaxed and ready to write!

Commit to a daily word goal

When trying to stay motivated, make sure to commit to a specific word goal per day when you are writing. Have your goal be realistic and specific, for example, plan to write 1000 words per day or 200 words in one hour. Similar to maintaining a daily routine, whatever your goal may be stick to it and follow it.

Look for inspiration

You may feel unmotivated to write, simply because you don't feel interesting in your piece and need some inspiration. Luckily, in today's world, there are so many resources to use when you need inspiration. Inspiration may come from a book, an article, or Pinterest. When you feel unmotivated sift through the Internet or some of your favorite pieces for inspiration that might pick you up.

Read regularly!

As writers, we topic read our own work, but it is also important to down our own pieces and read something else. Taking moments to read a fun book of choice is important because it gives you a chance to relax and not feel pressed by your own writing piece. This can help you rewind for a moment, before writing again. Reading is also important because you may come across pieces of inspiration that motivate you to your piece.

Remind yourself why you started writing

It is important to remind yourself why you wanted to write your piece and why you started writing in the first place. Remember the goal of your piece and how it will impact people. Visualize the accomplishment of finishing your piece as a way to kick-start your motivation, before beginning to write again.

Don't edit while writing

While writing it is extremely important to remember to write now, and edit later. When you are feeling motivated and inspired, don't stop to worry about grammar or thematic decisions, instead, leave all your editing for later. Pausing to edit midway through your writing, will hamper your process.

Take breaks

Taking breaks may not be the first thing you do when trying to stay motivated as a writer, but it is essential! Writing incessantly is draining and may lead to burn-out and a lack of interest in your writing piece, which is why it is important to take breaks. There are no specific parameters when it comes to how long your breaks should be (they may be 20 minutes or 2 days), but it is important to take breaks to gain your motivation again.

Reward yourself

Writing doesn't have to feel like a chore, rather you should feel excited to write! It is difficult to feel excited to write when you have no motivation, which is why you should reward yourself after completing a piece or a paragraph. Of course, the way you reward yourself is up to you but some examples may be:

- Stand up and go for a walk

- Eat your favorite snack or candy

Connect with other writers

Lastly, connect with other writers! It is hard to write by yourself, which is why it is important to connect with others. Joining a writing group or connecting with some of your favorite writers, just might be the motivation you need. Here at Blue Pencil, I strive to create a relaxed and helpful space for writers, that will regain your motivation!

In conclusion, you don't have to quit writing because you feel stuck and unmotivated, I hope with these tips you will remember why you started writing in the first place and make the necessary changes to gain your motivation, again!
