For writers, there are many resources on how to write well, but it is also important to understand the issues that may arise. Several writing mistakes commonly surface, and all writers should be aware of them. Whether you are a professional writer, reminding yourself of these mistakes, or a new writer, read on to ensure you aren't endangering your writing with these errors:
Don't Write Infrequently
One of the worst things a writer can do is write sporadically. Although it may be difficult to sit down and write each day, it is fundamental. The first step to being a writer is actually sitting down and writing. Your first draft of writing won't be perfect, but at least you have written something. As a writer, avoid writing randomly, but rather make sure to jot down at least one sentence per day. Writing every day will ensure you release all your thoughts, finish your writing quicker and establish a habit of writing.
Don't Doubt Yourself
Yes, it is hard to tame the inner critic inside you, but it is important when writing. It is hard to not compare yourself to more-advanced writers, but focus on your work and getting your idea out. There is no use in stressing over other writers, instead, remind yourself why you are writing and that no writer is perfect.
Don't Use Clichés
Clichés are tropes or expressions that have lost their originality due to overuse and using an extreme amount of clichés will leave your readers bored. Rather than relying on overused clichés, use your imagination to make your writing feel fresh and interesting. Clichés also don't translate well into other languages, which may create gaps in the story for international readers. You want your novel to feel engaging and contemporary for readers, so use modern wording and original ideas.
Don't Stop Writing Your Novel
Whatever you do make sure you don't quit your novel. If you feel unmotivated to write, don't give up on your novel, instead, take a walk or read another book. Writing a book is difficult and takes dedication, which is why it is important to remind yourself of your goals. Start with the first chapter and then continue through the other chapters. Later on, you will be thankful you continued writing your story, so don't stop! (For more tips on how to stay motivated while writing, click on the button below.)
Don't Write And Edit At The Same Time
New writers often write, rewrite that piece of writing, edit that piece of writing, rewrite, and so on. But, this cycle can have devasting effects on your writing. Writing and editing are two different activities and should be treated as such. Instead of writing and editing simultaneously, start by writing and then edit later in the process. This technique of writing lets you get all your thoughts on the page, leading you to dedicate your attention to writing.
Don't Create Boring Characters
Characters are what make novels, so construct memorable ones! Before sitting down to write your novel, devote time to developing unique characters with personalities, voices, and quirks. Identify the backstories of all of your characters, including the main character, villains, and secondary characters. Every character should be interesting, even if they have a minimal role in the story. It is important your readers get to know the motives of your characters and find a character they are interested in. Be sure to ask yourself about the actions of each character.
Don't Stick To One Genre
Avoid staying with one genre, but rather try out different genres before settling on a singular one. Once you complete your first novel, explore different genres to get out of your comfort zone. If you typically write romance, perhaps write a science fiction novel or a fantasy novel. Branching out and trying different genres will get you out of your comfort zone and may help you find a genre you enjoy writing even more!
Don't Edit Solo
After completing your novel you should do rounds of your self-editing, though it is also important to bring others into the process. While self-editing make sure to start with the big picture, then move on to the minor details including grammar and punctuation. After you have self-edited your novel, you may want to work with a professional editor. Working with an editor may help you understand your novel from a reader's perspective and edit faster.
Don't Lack A Setting
A strong setting is crucial for enthralling readers and making them feel part of the novel, but the setting is often forgotten about. As you write your novel, make sure to keep the setting in mind and don't overlook it. Describe all five senses of the setting, in order to make readers feel in the story. Show the actions and life of the place and develop a strong sense of setting for your readers. The setting is important in a novel for drawing in readers and it is crucial that you don't leave it aside.
Don't Include Small Talk
It is important to include dialogue when writing a novel, but it isn't necessary to include small talk. As an introvert, this is music to my ears, though there is an actual reason for not incorporating small talk. Every piece of dialogue included in your novel should have a purpose, and unless small talk will uncover a clue, introduce a new character or reveal something new there is no need to include small talk. Although you may feel tempted to include a small talk in hopes of making your characters feel real unless small talk is noting something important or advancing the story, skip it and focus on action.
For new writers, there are several problems you may encounter, but hopefully, with these tips, you can eliminate some of these errors and alleviate the stress of writing a novel.
