While more well-known for its gorgeous beaches and blue water, relaxed atmosphere, and lush plants, Maui's food scene must not be overlooked. From delicious fruit dishes to seafood to rainbow-colored desserts, the island of Maui has it all. But what are some of the best places to try?
Ululani Hawaiian Shave Ice
Continually earning the title of "Best Shave Ice," Ululani Hawaiian Shave Ice is an absolute must-try. With various locations across the island, you will never be too far from a delicious, hand-crafted cone of shave ice. Their menu boasts over 50 fresh and delicious syrup flavors, ranging from sweet bubble gum to tangy sour lemon. As a lover of tartness, my favorite syrup combination is sour apple, pink lemonade, and sour lemon. Yum! Along with syrup, you can also get your cone with ice cream or azuki beans. And let's not forget about the toppings. From mochi to toasted coconut, there are plenty of deliciously tropical toppings to choose from. Due to its popularity, Ululani's almost always has a wait, so prepare to stand in line for some time. (However, don't fret, as it usually moves quickly.) Overall, no trip to Maui is complete without a trip to Ululani Hawaiian Shave Ice.
Mama's Fish House
For a more elegant dining experience, Mama's Fish House. Located right on the beach and with great ocean and palm tree views, Mama's Fish House doesn't just offer a great menu but a lovely dining location. This restaurant is a local landmark and so popular that reservations are critical. In fact, Mama's Fish House is typically booked months in advance, so make sure you make reservations early. But this is all for good reason because their fresh and delicious menu will not disappoint. Mama's Fish House partners with local fishermen, so their seafood is always fresh and fragrant. However, don't let the name lead you astray! While the majority of their menu does center on seafood, vegetarian options are also offered. As a vegetarian, I especially loved their Waipoli Greens and Kula Strawberries salad. That being said, Mama's Fish House is a fine-dining establishment, and with that comes a higher price point. However, if you have the means, Mama's Fish House is an absolute must-try for the exceptional quality and unforgettable setting.
A'a Roots
Food doesn't get prettier than at A'a Roots---just look at the thumbnail image! A casual, completely vegan, eco-friendly restaurant, A'a Roots offers delicious and healthy plant-based dishes. From gorgeous rainbow-colored smoothie bowls to salads and toasts topped with greens and vibrant flowers, everything at A’a Roots is as visually stunning as it is nourishing. The laid-back atmosphere and commitment to sustainability make it a favorite among locals and visitors. So, whether you're grabbing a quick smoothie or sitting down for a colorful, nutrient-packed lunch, A’a Roots is a go-to spot for fresh, feel-good vegan dishes.
Maui's food scene may be underrated, but it's packed with fresh, diverse, and tropical eats. So, whether you're craving a refreshing shave ice dessert (or breakfast!) or sitting down for a savory lunch, there’s a restaurant to satisfy every taste.
