A steaming cup of hot cocoa on a cold night is the perfect winter sweet treat. There’s something incredibly soothing and nostalgic about nursing a rich cup of hot chocolate while watching a classic Christmas movie. The best part is that you can flavor the chocolate however you like, such as with peppermint, maple, or my favorite, spicy hot chocolate.
Here is a short and sweet recipe for spicy hot chocolate that is smooth and decadent with a good kick. This spicy hot chocolate recipe is inspired by Mexican hot chocolate champurrado, typically made with corn flour or masa. With the aromatics from the cinnamon and vanilla and the heat from the chili pepper, this spicy hot chocolate is delicious with just the right amount of sweetness. Full Recipe:
Ingredients:
½ cup of dark chocolate chopped (72% for a rich and subtly sweet flavor)
2 cups of whole milk
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 chili pepper (with seeds removed) or chili powder
Dash of sea salt
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions:
Add the chopped dark chocolate and a fourth of the milk to a small pot and bring to medium heat.
Once the chocolate melts, add the rest of the milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a pinch of sea salt. Whisk to combine thoroughly.
Add the de-seeded chili pepper.
Bring the mixture to a light boil.
Take the pot off the heat and let the chocolate sit for about 10 minutes.
Remove the chili pepper from the drink.
Add in tablespoons of sugar until sweetened as desired.
Pour the hot chocolate into cute mugs, then enjoy!
