Five Ways to Elevate Your Avocado Toast

Avocado toast is a staple breakfast or lunch idea that is not only delicious but also rich in nutrients and healthy fats. The filling toast is typically made with a thick slice of toasted sourdough bread and seasoned to taste. While this classic recipe is hard to beat, try something new that is just as healthy and delicious. If you are searching for a different way to enjoy this meal, take a look at these five variations to elevate your avocado toast experience. These variations start with the classic recipe, adding ingredients and steps. 


Classic Avocado Toast Recipe:

Ingredients: 

  • 1 slice of sourdough 

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil 

  • ½ avocado

  • 1 lemon wedge 

  • Salt and pepper, to taste 


Instructions: 

  1. Heat a pan on medium heat and add the 2 tablespoons of olive oil. 

  2. Toast the bread until golden and crispy on both sides.  

  3. On a plate, mash the avocado with lemon, salt, and pepper. 

  4. Spread the mashed avocado onto the sourdough. 


Avocado Toast Variations 

1. Pesto Egg and Tomato Avocado Toast 

This variation offers a depth of richness from the pesto while still keeping the palate bright and balanced from the cherry tomatoes. If you’re a pesto fan who wants something a little more filling, look no further than this recipe. 


Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon of pesto, store-bought or homemade.

  • 1 egg 

  • 3 cherry tomatoes 

  • Salt and pepper, to taste 

  • ½ teaspoon of chili flakes, optional 


Instructions:

  1. Start in a pan on medium heat. Once the pan is hot, add the tablespoon of pesto and spread it out in the pan. 

  2. Wait 3-5 minutes to allow the pesto to heat up, or until bubbling, then crack the egg in the center of the pesto. 

  3. Cover the pan with a lid and wait until the egg is set. Use a spatula to transfer the pesto egg to a plate.  

  4. To plate, start with the classic avocado toast and add your pesto egg on top. Wash and cut your cherry tomatoes in half, and place them around the toast. 

  5. Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste.

  6. Top with optional chili flakes. 


2. Mushroom Arugula Avocado Toast 

Umami and slightly spicy—upgrade your avocado toast with this simple recipe that adds richness and a kick. It is also a great way to add more vegetables and nutrients to your meal. 


Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil 

  • 4 cremini mushrooms, sliced

  • 1 handful of arugula

  • Salt and pepper, to taste  


Instructions: 

  1. Start in a pan on high heat. Once the pan is hot, add the avocado oil and sliced mushrooms. Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 2-3 minutes, then remove from heat.

  2. Place the mushrooms over the avocado toast and top with a handful of arugula.  


3. Caprese Avocado Toast 

The caprese version is brightened by pairing fresh herbs and tomatoes for a fresh and light taste. This recipe is perfect for when tomatoes are in season and to enjoy on a warm day. 


Ingredients: 

  • Fresh basil, 1 sprig 

  • 3 cherry tomatoes 

  • 3 fresh mozzarella slices 

  • Balsamic glaze, to taste

  • Salt and pepper, to taste 


Instructions:

  1. Prep the sliced cherry tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. 

  2. To assemble, top your avocado toast with the mozzarella slices, then sliced cherry tomatoes, and balsamic glaze. 

  3. Finish off with salt, pepper, and fresh basil leaves. 


4. Lox Avocado Toast 

If you enjoy lox bagels with cream cheese, switch it up with this avocado and lox combination. It is a filling toast with a smoky, savory bite. 


Ingredients:

  • 3-4 slices of smoked salmon

  • 1 lemon wedge 

  • Red onion, thinly sliced 

  • Salt and pepper, to taste 


Instructions:

  1. To assemble, top your avocado toast with smoked salmon and thinly sliced red onion.

  2. Finish off with lemon juice, salt, and pepper to taste.  


5. Chili Crisp Fried Egg Avocado Toast 

Chili oil has become a popular ingredient that has taken over social media food trends. It is something you don’t want to miss out on. The spiciness pairs perfectly with the fried egg and rich avocado.


Ingredients: 

  • 2 tablespoons chili crisp

  • 1 scallion 

  • 1 egg

  • Salt and pepper, to taste 


Instructions: 

  1. Finely chop the scallion and set aside. 

  2. Heat a pan to medium heat and add 1 ½ tablespoons of chili crisp. Once the pan is hot, crack an egg. Cook until the egg is fully cooked. 

  3. Place the chili crisp fried egg over the avocado toast. 

  4. Top the toast with salt, pepper, and scallions.
