Have you ever noticed how junk food makes you feel tired, unfocused, or moody? What we eat affects how we feel, think, and live. Knowing the what, why, and how behind the foods you consume is crucial to your lifestyle. From a faith standpoint, God intentionally created foods that He desired for human consumption: natural, minimally processed, nutritious foods.
Food Labels vs. Real Nutrition
The food industry has completely changed the way people eat today, along with their perspective on food. Many foods are heavily processed, packed with artificial ingredients, added sugars, and chemicals. The interesting part is that these products are often marketed with appealing labels such as “low calorie," "low-fat," or "sugar-free." While these labels may sound great in theory, they hide the reality of what is actually inside the food.
This can easily confuse the consumer. Confusion drives poor decisions because when people are unsure about what is truly healthy, they tend to lean towards convenience or marketing rather than doing their own in-depth research. As a result, many believe they are making healthy decisions for their bodies when in reality they are choosing foods that lack real nutritional value.
This is why returning to simpler, whole, natural foods can make such a difference. Foods that are closer to the way God created them, such as fruits, vegetables, unprocessed meats, raw milk, whole grains, and nuts and seeds, provide the body with real nourishment. Choosing foods that truly fuel us allows us to take a step towards caring for our bodies the way God intended us to.
The Bible’s View: Your Body is a Temple
Scripture reminds us that our bodies are not random or insignificant, but rather valuable and intentional creations of God. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 states, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit?” Regardless of your level of faith, this verse highlights a universal truth that our bodies are meant to be treated with care and respect.
A temple is a place that is protected, highly valued, and well-maintained. One practical way we can honor our bodies is through the choices we make about the food we eat. When we fuel our bodies with nourishing foods, we support our health from a multitude of standpoints: physical, mental, and spiritual, allowing us to live, serve, and function at our best.
Fueling Your Body Like a Temple
While this may sound overwhelming at first, making these healthier choices does not have to be complicated or expensive. Many of these swaps and steps can be easily added to your routine, all while making you feel better. So what exactly are these biblical foods that I’m referring to?
Red meat: specifically organic or grass-fed. Red meats, such as beef, lamb, and venison, provide “high levels of vitamins, minerals, heart-healthy fatty acids, and bioactive amino acids” (Rubin & Axe, 2025, p. 67). All of these things contribute to increased brain activity, energy, and muscle strength and aid the immune system.
Eggs: once again, specifically organic or pasture-raised. Eggs are a great source of protein. They also contain several vitamins and minerals like “vitamin B12, vitamin E, riboflavin, folic acid, calcium, zinc, and iron,” all of which contribute to disease prevention, eye health, brain health, skin health, and weight loss (Rubin & Axe, 2025, p. 67).
Whole Grains: such as certain breads, barley, wheat, oats, and brown rice. Whole grains contain fiber, vitamins, and carbohydrates that fuel the body. Sourdough bread, specifically, is easier to digest due to the composition of its starter and the fermentation process. The starter is made of wild yeast and bacteria, which start breaking down before even reaching the gut. The fermentation process is longer, which breaks down a lot of the gluten.
Dairy: Raw milk, butter, yogurt, kefir, cheese, and cultured cream. Dairy provides the body with protein, calcium, healthy fats, and probiotics. These things contribute to building and repairing tissues and muscles, supporting strong bones, and aiding gut health and digestion.
Fruits & Vegetables: Fruits and vegetables provide essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. These things support immunity, aid digestion, protect against diseases, and provide energy without crashes (unlike processed snacks).
Natural Sweeteners: such as honey or maple syrup (in raw form). Honey and maple syrup provide the body with quick carbohydrates, trace amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and prebiotic effects. These elements allow the body to fuel without crashing, boost immunity, and feed the gut with beneficial bacteria.
Healthy fats, like olive oil: Olive oil had many uses in the Bible for sacred rituals, daily life, and health. It was used for cooking, preserving food, moisturizing skin, and ceremonial purposes. Olive oil contains healthy monounsaturated fats and fat-soluble vitamins, both of which contribute to heart, brain, skin, hair, and cellular health.
Conclusion
Taking care of your body and eating the way God intended you to doesn’t mean you have to eat all the time perfectly. It’s about making intentional choices that fuel your body, honor God, and support your overall well-being. Every small swap, like choosing whole grains over processed bread, drizzling olive oil on a salad, or adding in more fruits and vegetables, adds up to long-lasting benefits for your mind, body, and spirit. Remember, your body is a temple. Treat it with care, respect, and nourishment. Eating with purpose gives you energy, focus, and strength to live fully, serve others, and thrive in multiple areas of life. Start small, stay consistent, and think before you eat.
