The Top Seven Fall Food and Beverage Pairings to Try

Updated: Nov 10

Written by Lindsay Grohs

In light of it being fall, I figured it would be fitting to share some food and beverage pairings that feature the cozy autumn flavors this season brings. From earthy vegetables to warm spices and hearty ingredients, we will explore pairings highlighting each of these rich flavors. This guide will dive into delicious food and beverage combinations that celebrate the best of fall.

Pairing 1: Maple-Roasted Sweet Potatoes & Cinnamon-Infused Apple Cider (Hot or Cold)

The sugary tones of the maple syrup pair well with the naturally sweet, caramelized roasted sweet potatoes, which, when combined with the cinnamon notes of the cider, result in an overall rich saccharine flavor. This is an excellent choice to bring to a Friendsgiving or holiday gathering, or even just whip up as an evening snack for you and your partner.

Pairing 2: Apple & Cheddar Grilled Cheese & Chai Tea Latte

The balance of sweet and savory flavors from the apple and cheddar in the grilled cheese pairs beautifully with the warm spices of the chai tea latte. This dish offers a savory base with a creamy texture that comes from the cheddar cheese. The apple introduces a nice crunch and sweet, yet tartness, which further brings out the sharpness of the cheddar. The chai tea latte emphasizes the contrast of the sweet and savory notes of the sandwich, which makes for a cozy, well-rounded fall-flavored pairing. This is a perfect combination for a fall-themed brunch or an afternoon pick-me-up snack.

Pairing 3: Pumpkin Soup with Coconut Milk & Spicy Ginger Beer

The mild sweetness of the pumpkin combined with the creaminess the coconut milk brings to the dish pairs wonderfully with the spicy, bold flavors of the ginger beer. This combo brings a contrast of sweetness and heat to your taste buds. I would recommend this pairing for a Friendsgiving, autumn dinner, or appetizer and drinks party.

Pairing 4: Roasted Pear Salad with Goat Cheese & Pinot Grigio

The fruity sweetness of the pears combined with the tartness of the goat cheese, complimented by the lighter notes of a Pinot Grigio, adds a refreshing contrast to this dish. In conclusion, this combination is a delightful choice for a brunch, lunch, or starter in a multi-course dinner.

Pairing 5: Spaghetti Squash Carbonara & Oaked Chardonnay

This lighter alternative to pasta that holds slightly sweet and nutty flavors enhances the earthy, aromatic tones of the creamy marinara sauce. This dish pairs beautifully with an oaked chardonnay, as the wine’s buttery, smokiness elevates the sweeter flavors of the squash and sauce.

Pairing 6: Mushroom and Thyme Flatbread & Dry Hard Cider

This flatbread emphasizes a herby aroma, as the earthy flavors and soft texture of the mushrooms combine with the aromatic thyme and crispy flatbread to produce a warm savory bite of flavor with a satisfying crunch. Pairing this dish with the hard cider highlights the acidity of the cider and the herbs of the flatbread. It’s perfect as an appetizer or shared dish on the table.

Pairing 7: Maple Pecan Tiramisu & Espresso Martini

This type of tiramisu is achieved by soaking the ladyfingers in a mixture of maple syrup and espresso, adding chopped pecans between the layers, and adding a touch of maple syrup to the mascarpone mixture. This dish adds a fall twist to the classic tiramisu and pairs wonderfully with an espresso martini as the bold, rich coffee notes of each element create a harmonious blend of warm flavors. The maple syrup adds a sweet flavor, the pecans add a nutty element and crunch, and the mascarpone layers add a soft, creamy texture to the dish. These flavors are balanced by the smooth, bold espresso tones of the martini. Overall, it is a perfect pairing for a nightcap, party dessert, or to enjoy during a cozy evening at home.
