Welcome to Finland, the land of the Northern Lights, sauna sessions, and surprisingly inventive cuisine! Whether you're a fan of foraging, a herring enthusiast, or just someone who likes their food to come with a side of quirky charm, Finland’s restaurant scene is here to impress. So, grab your forks (and your sense of humor) as we dive into the delicious and delightful dining destinations of Suomi.

1. Olo Restaurant—Fancy Food

If you're feeling extra bougie (and your wallet is feeling heavy), Olo is the Michelin-starred spot for you. You should expect tiny plates of edible art where every bite is a mystery wrapped in a riddle wrapped in smoked birch. Yes, that’s a thing. Plus, a fun fact is that the servers have perfected the art of answering, “What am I eating?” with grace. Pro tip: just nod and say, "Fascinating," no matter what they say.

2. Ravintola Savotta—Lumberjack Chic

Do you like your dinner with a side of nostalgia and a whiff of pine? Welcome to Ravintola Savotta, where the decor looks like a lumberjack’s living room and the menu screams "Finnish grandma." Think hearty stews, reindeer (sorry, Rudolph), and rye bread that could double as a paperweight. I recommend the "Lapland's Road" platter, which is a culinary adventure with enough protein to fuel a moose. You will leave so full you might want to hibernate until next winter.

3. Juuri --- Tapas, But Make It Finnish

Juuri is like that trendy cousin who travels the world but still remembers their roots. Here, Finnish cuisine meets tapas-sized portions, perfect for people who want to taste everything without committing to a full reindeer steak. I especially suggest their breadsticks, as they are legendary! Seriously, people come for the breadsticks and stay for the tiny, adorable portions. If Finland had food paparazzi, this would be their hot spot.

4. Löyly --- Saunas & Salmon

Why just eat when you can eat and sweat? At Löyly, a seaside sauna complex in Helsinki, you can enjoy a plate of smoked salmon while contemplating your life choices in a 90°C steam room. However, be prepared that your meal may be overshadowed by the fact that you just saw someone in a towel sprint across the terrace in -10°C weather. Still, we love it.

5. Cafe Regatta: Cinnamon Rolls and Chaos

Cafe Regatta is as Finnish as it gets. Located by the sea in Helsinki, this tiny red cottage serves up oversized cinnamon buns and coffee strong enough to wake up a bear. I especially recommend you order your bun korvapuusti-style (literally “slapped ears”) and ask for seconds. Then, after dinner, you can have fun trying not to tip over in their rentable rowboats.

6. Harald Viking Restaurant—Axe Your Hunger

At Harald, it’s all about the Viking vibes. Picture yourself feasting on elk and honey-baked root vegetables while sipping mead out of a horn. The servers are dressed in Viking attire, so don’t be alarmed if someone brings you a skewer large enough to double as a javelin. That is why I also challenge you not to laugh when your friend insists on wearing the provided Viking helmet. Spoiler alert: No one looks cool in it.

7. Nolla: Zero-Waste and 100% Delicious

For the eco-conscious foodie, Nolla is a must-visit. Finland’s first zero-waste restaurant turns food scraps into gourmet gold. Did you know beet peels could taste like happiness? Now you do. Plus, what is great about Nolla is that they compost everything, including any unnecessary guilt you may have from ordering a second dessert.

8. Hesburger: Finland’s McDonald's, But Better

No Finnish food tour is complete without a stop at Hesburger, the fast-food chain that’s more iconic in Finland than Marimekko prints. The secret? Their legendary mayo-based sauces are sure to make even a Monday feel like a Friday. Their “Mega Meal" is also special, and I highly recommend it, as one burger is never enough when there’s Hesburger mayo involved.

9. Arctic SnowHotel Ice Restaurant ---- Chill Out

Ever wanted to eat dinner in a freezer? At the Ice Restaurant, located inside a snow hotel in Rovaniemi, you can. The tables, walls, and even your plate are made of ice. It’s a cool experience—pun absolutely intended—just make sure you wear gloves. (No one wants frostbite with their filet of Arctic char.)

10. Kotipizza—Because Pizza Is Universal

Last, but certainly not least, is Kotipizza. Kotipizza is Finland’s favorite pizza chain known for topping pies with unexpected delights like smoked reindeer and pickled herring. Love it or hate it, the Pizza Berlusconi (featuring smoked reindeer) is their pride and joy. Also, yes, this restaurant is named after an Italian politician who didn’t like their pizza. The Finns really know how to clap back.

Now, if you aren't ready to book your flight to Finland yet, then I'm not sure what can convince you. Just remember, whether you're eating Michelin-starred masterpieces or cinnamon rolls the size of your face, Finland’s food scene will leave you smiling—and maybe loosening your belt. Bon appétit! Or as the Finns say, hyvää ruokahalua!
