Atlanta’s Azotea Cantina: Fresh Takes on Mexican Classics

Updated: Sep 14

In a bustling city like Atlanta, there are no shortages of amazing restaurants and joints to try. The Atlanta food scene is incredibly diverse, so there is always a little something for everyone. But when it comes to Mexican food, one spot takes the cake (or the taco) over the rest. That place is Atlanta’s Azotea Cantina; the perfect restaurant for those with an eye for style and a taste for Mexican food with a delicious twist.

The Azotea Cantina is in the center of Atlantic Station, a popular outdoor mall filled with trendy retail stores and cool food spots. Because of its proximity to two city universities, this restaurant is an ideal spot for teens and college students to have a fun night on the town while enjoying high-quality food.

Azotea Cantina takes the spotlight for its wonderful dining ambiance and outstanding Mexican fusion dishes that stand out in any crowd. From the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed by the chic atmosphere. With geometric patterns incorporated into the colorful modern decor, exposed ceiling, large windows, and plant ornaments, the restaurant’s layout is reminiscent of contemporary interior design in Mexico City. Overall, the environment is lively, bright, and inviting, so you’re guaranteed to have an enjoyable experience.

This restaurant features a menu heavily inspired by Mexico City with a blend of chef influence that culinary students and food enthusiasts will greatly appreciate. The menu starts strong with the classic appetizers of guacamole, queso, and a salsa trio. However, the Azotea Cantina adds its twist by having the option to add pomegranate and pineapple, or pork belly and cotija cheese to their guacamole. This fusion of flavors is colorful and innovative, adding an extra punch to the Mexican staple. But if you don't feel adventurous, no worries! Azotea Cantina’s guac is tangy,  well-seasoned, and has a delightful kick at the end for spice lovers.

What’s great about Azotea is that they have entrees for any mood, whether you crave queso-covered burritos, seafood tostadas, citrus salads, or sizzling hot plates. However, their taco selection is my personal favorite with ten mouthwatering choices. I highly recommend trying them all to experience everything they have to offer. That being said, after visiting this restaurant several times, three tacos have quickly become my favorites. First, there is the carne asada taco, which is packed with juicy, tender steak and topped with spicy serrano sauce and julienned red onions. It’s a classic street taco favorite that never disappoints. Next is the mushroom taco, a vegetarian option filled with savory grilled portobello, pico de gallo, and Morita pepper aioli. Finally, their “chicken al carbon” is spicy and sweet with achiote pepper pulled chicken and pineapple pico de gallo. These are only a handful of great tacos to choose from. Also, if you visit on Tuesdays, you can mix and match three different taco flavors for free!

Last but not least, Azotea Cantina prides itself on its hand-crafted cocktails and mocktails that bring tropical flavors to Georgia. I highly recommend trying their Hibiscus Spritz mocktail. With its refreshing, tart, and citrusy taste, this drink is a good pair with the rich flavors of the entrees. Overall, my experience dining at the Azotea Cantina never disappoints. The food is always on par, and the ambiance is unforgettable, making it a restaurant worth visiting.
